The Rotterman is the product you get from breeding half Doberman half-Rottweiler, and it’s a designer dog with a little difference from the two.

The Rottweiler Doberman Mix is a cross of two pure breeds – the Doberman Pinscher and the Rottweiler.

The result is not a pure breed like its parents. It is a designer dog breed much loved in the United States.

Both of these dogs are protective, loving, and loyal, and so is their offspring mix.

Before bringing this breed home, there are a few important things you need to know about it.

Characteristics Of The Rotterman (Half Doberman, Half Rottweiler)

The Rotterman is also known as Rottie Doberman, is a hybrid dog.  It may be large or medium, depending on the dominant parent.  It may have the body of a Doberman and legs like a Rottweiler or vice versa.

Rotterman has large teeth and giant ears that it erects in case of any danger.  This breed can jump very high, meaning they can cover a long distance when running.  They eat a lot because they need plenty of energy and love to play most time.

Owning this breed can be an interesting experience as you get the advantage of seeing both species in one breed.  These dogs are intelligent, friendly and love to have lots of fun.  Let’s look at its characteristics.

Colour and Coat

The breed has a strong, thick and heavy tail with a black and tan coat colour.

Even if you cross-breed these two dogs yourself, it’s hard to foretell the colour of your Rotterman.

This breed has a beautiful shiny, short or straight coat that prevents it from the harsh weather. It acts as waterproof in the winter, keeping the body warm, while it protects from the hot sun in summer.

Character

Rotterman is a loyal, loving, caring, playful, and excellent guard dog.  Coming from two strict dogs that love to guard their territory, they will guard their territory loyally.

As the Alpha to this dog, you can train it to have a gentle and soft temperament around your family and loved ones.   You will need to invest a good amount of time in training well.

Social Skills

Social skills are what makes the dog what it is when around people.  It is the most important thing to give to your furry friend to make him happy.

Lack of social skills leads to disaster and irritation to the dog. The two parents of this breed have healthy social skills that also require good training.

This breed is commonly used to guard homes and family members. Ensure you take this dog out on walks to experience life outside the home.

Training

The parents of this breed are used in several challenging roles across the world. This famous breed works with the police, guards, as well as the army.

Therefore this dog is easy to train, especially when in the hands of an experienced trainer.   You will require a good amount of yard for this dog to run and exercise each day.  A backyard is even better to play with your furry friend and enjoy interactive games as a family.

You can also give him toys indoors to keep him mentally active even while indoors. You can take your dog to the park on weekends or to a run in the morning, or hike in the evening.

It would help if you gave your dog a chance to release its energy positively so that he doesn’t get destructive behaviour or show signs of restlessness.

Exercise

Please note that training is not exercising.  The dog will need several hours of exercise each day.

This is a big muscular dog with lots of energy and exercise needs to help it stay healthy and in great shape.

Lack of exercise makes them very frustrated, and they pack a lot of unwanted weight if they don’t get the regular exercise they require.

Have your Rotterman exercise at least twice a day for half an hour each. This will cause your dog to grow happy and healthy.

Grooming

As a pet owner, you need to give your dog some good grooming, and this breed is no exception.

This breed also sheds fur like other breeds, even though its hair is pretty short.  Clean this short hair at least 3 or 4 times a week.  Brush it daily to remove all debris and help maintain a healthy coat.

Brush its teeth at least 3 times a week to ensure it does not get plague in its teeth. Trim the nails as well, so it doesn’t scratch you or your loved ones.  Generally, give it good grooming every day.

Good Diet

A good diet is best to provide the dog with a good body maintenance and proper growth.  They require 3 meals a day and a total of 3 cups of food each day.

They have no special dietary requirements, but it is a good idea to make sure they are eating high-quality dog food with the right mix of protein, fibre, and the required vitamins and minerals.

Fact: A sudden change in dog food or diet can cause diarrhoea in puppies. Before using any branded food, make sure it has no health issues.

Common Health Issues That Face Half Doberman Half-Rottweiler

These hybrid dogs are generally taken as healthier than purebred dogs. Owners should be aware of the health status of this breed.

Both generations have cancer in their later years, so you should keep an eye on it and make sure to check for any symptoms as soon as possible.

This breed may be at risk for muscle condition with age. Your dog may not be in pain, but you should be conscious of its health through signs and symptoms.
