What Is A Bullmastiff and Rottweiler Mix?

A Bullmastiff Rottweiler mix is a mixed breed crossing a Bullmastiff and a Rottweiler. This mixed breed is achieved by mating the parents of either breed. They also go by the nickname “Mastweiler”.

The Rottweiler and the Bullmastiff are popular and similar. Does the Bull mastiff Rottie mix end up quite compatible?

Characteristics Of A Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a large-sized dog of the Working Dog group. Males reach 25 to 27 inches in height and 93 to 135 lbs in weight. Females reach 22 to 25 inches in height and 80 to 100 lbs in weight. They have a life expectancy of 9 to 10 years.

Even if popular media leads you to believe Rottweilers are brutish and aggressive dogs, they are a widely loved breed. Rottweilers rank 8th in the United States according to the American Kennel Club. You can see this intelligent breed working in different jobs as police dogs, therapy dogs, and seeing-eye dogs.

Characteristics Of A Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a large-sized dog of the Working Dog group. Males reach 25 to 27 inches in height and 110 to 130 lbs in weight. Females reach 24 to 26 inches in height and 100 to 120 lbs in weight. They have a life expectancy of 7 -9 years.

Bullmastiffs are stiff competition (pun intended) of Rottweilers for the role of the vigilant guard. Even taller and more muscular, they originate from England and they are a result of crossbreeding the Bulldog and the Mastiff. They are reliable friends and very protective, though it could be at the point of aggression.

Is A Bullmastiff and Rottweiler Mix Compatible?

To the untrained eye, the Bullmastiff and the Rottweiler may look like similar dogs. However, you can pick up several differences if you spend more time around these delightful creatures.

Bullmastiff and Rottweiler Differences

One of the physical differences between the two breeds is the colors that their coats come in. The Rottweiler’s classic look is a sleek black coat with rust or tan markings. The Bullmastiff is a little more colorful with Fawn, Red, and other combination standard colors.

Other than that, there are a few personality differences between the two. The Rottweiler is definitely more family-friendly and adaptable to different owners and situations. This trainability makes them suitable for various jobs. Bullmastiffs are more stubborn on the other hand and take on the guard dog role the best.

Bullmastiff and Rottweiler Similarities

You will see that physically and psychologically, there are a lot of similarities between the two breeds. They are known as tough guard dogs who do not have a problem attacking if their owner is in danger.

First off, they are rather low-maintenance dogs. Despite shedding, they are very easy to groom and don’t require too much upkeep. Their smooth and short coats will not give owners too much grief when it comes to the turn of the seasons.

What Is The Bullmastiff Rottweiler Mix Like?

Crossbreeds are still unpredictable as they come. While there are a lot of cases for us to study and consider, not all traits are manifested in each offspring. Here are some of the factors you can ponder on if you are considering the mix.

Given that both the Bullmastiff and the Rottweiler are large-sized dogs, they are already expected to have quite short life expectancies. Given their average age, we can expect their mix to reach the same, or slightly longer due to something known as hybrid vigor.

The concept of hybrid vigor has shown that it has favorable results in dogs. This means that there are certain characteristics of purebred dogs that are improved when two parents of different breeds produce a mixed breed dog. It has been noted that biological fitness is one of the beneficiary traits, which includes resistance from diseases and lifespan.

Size

Now, these are two hulking dogs that you are dealing with, and it’s likely that their offspring will turn out to be quite intimidating in their own right. It looks like you can expect the Mastweiler puppy to grow as big as its parents.

Both dogs rapidly grow in their first year of age, so you need to be on the lookout for their living space. This makes sure that they are comfortable growing into their environment.

Coat

Both dogs are considered low maintenance because of their easily manageable coats. They both have short coats that are easy to brush through and straightforward to clean. Their coats are water-repellent and you won’t find it too hard to give them a washing.

Even so, they still shed and are not considered hypoallergenic coats. You still need to take care of them once the seasons roll around.

Temperament

This is where they are quite similar. Both the Bullmastiff and the Rottweiler are vigilant protectors, brave and loyal in the face of danger.

In terms of adaptability and recommendations for families with kids, it’s easier to get along with a Rottweiler than a Bullmastiff. Their mix could have a streak of aggression, which should be addressed as soon as possible. Either way, training is a must for this mix, and their Rottweiler side will be thanking you for it!
